PRSSA/CSULB Branch:

(Director of Communications, Vice President)

While attending California State University, Long Beach I was looking for ways to get involved and learn while doing. I found the CSULB branch of the Public Relations Student Society of America (PRSSA) and ran for board positions. In my second semester I took on teh role of Director of Communications - overseeing the internal and external communications for PRSSA LB. The communications went out to multiple audiences with multiple goals needing to be met.

At my time with the association, I revamped the website to a fresher, navigation-friendly hub to represent PRSSA LB; reconfigured the weekly newsletter to be interactive, consistent and relevant to club business; and launched the first blog (including the business plan and acting as Lead editor and publisher) that was sourced as a publishing credit for the CSULB JPR student requirement.

This opportunity helped me to grow my skills:

  • strategic communications - with multiple channels and audiences

  • association connections - working within our branch and with local and national branches

  • time management - balancing home, college, work to hit key deadlines

Earned the Outstanding Chapter Newsletter - Teahan National Chapter Awards Competition. This category honors the outstanding PRSSA newsletter. Criteria include quality of writing, creativity, design and content. Newsworthiness, frequency of publication and scope of distribution will also be considered by judges. Samples of the newsletter should accompany each entry.
